Op 11 augustus 1942 om 22.15 u. vertrok Wellington III (BJ767) van het 75e squadron van vliegveld Feltwell in Norfolk. Samen met 153 andere vliegtuigen bombardeerden zij Mainz, waarbij naar verluid 152 burgers omkwamen. Vermoedelijk kwamen 16 vliegtuigen niet terug. De BJ787 van kapitein Dobbin zou neergeschoten zijn om 1.33 u. door luitenant Hans Autenrieth van Stab II/NJG1 en kwam neer 700 meter ten zuidwesten van Vaals. Van de bemanning werden er drie krijgsgevangen gemaakt.  De  piloot Dobbin en air gunner Jury kwamen om het leven.

In september 1946 onderzocht de “Missing Research and Enquiry Service” de crash van Vickers Wellington BJ 767. Ze schreven hierover een rapport. In dit rapport stond geciteerd: “the aircraft crashed in the town of Vaals where it exploded on impact. Two bodies were taken from the crash and a watch and identity disc, a photo, and cigarette case were also found near the scene of the crash. These articles were first found by a Dutch civilian, but they were eventually taken from him by the Germans. Before giving these up to the Germans he took a note of the identity disc which read NZ411764 Sgt. J.L. Jury R.N.Z.A.F. The civilian also stated that the back of the watch had the inscription R.N.Z.A.F. 411764. The bodies were taken from the scene of the crash into two coffins, and they were buried in the Venlo Cemetery. Sgt. Jack Jury being laid to rest in grave No. 154 and Laurence Dobbin in grave No. 153”  (bron: sankttolbertvaals.nl )
